Dera Gai San Juan Celebration

Dera Gai San Juan Celebration
Monday, June 24, 2019

Dear Gai is an Aruban cultural festival, which has been celebrated for about 100 years with traditional song and dance. Dear Gai is a Papiamento word, which translates to "burying of the rooster" and is a holiday rife with pagan and Christian symbolism reflecting the influences of the Arawak natives and Spanish missionaries on the island. The symbol of the rooster and bright red and yellow costumes are central to events held at various locations on the island. Some hotels, restaurants, and malls may have a special day honoring this event as well.
