Dande Festival

Dande Festival
Friday, December 28, 2018

The name dande comes from the Papiamento word, dandara, meaning to revel; to have a good time. Played to welcome the New Year, dande began around 1880 after King Willem II liberated the slaves, who started playing the tambu (drum) and visited Aruban homes to wish them a happy New Year. This is a true local tradition and each year a festival is organized in which children and adults participate, so that the tradition may be handed down from generation to generation.
