Dande Festival

Dande Festival
Saturday, December 28, 2019

The name dande comes from the Papiamento word, dandara, meaning to revel; to have a good time. Played to welcome the New Year, dande began around 1880 after King Willem II liberated the slaves. The liberated slaves started playing the tambu (drum) and visited Aruban homes to wish them a happy New Year. This is a true local tradition and each year a festival is organized in which children and adults participate so that the tradition may be handed down from generation to generation.
